In February 2016, a 36 year old Machine Operator named Kevin, working at a cabinet company in Virginia,  suffered a severe crush injury of his dominant hand, ultimately requiring three surgeries. This was a devastating blow for this hard-working man, who needed to work to support his family. EagleOne helped Kevin get back to work safely and 170 days faster than expected, avoid litigation and additional medical costs, and even helped him stop smoking in the process!

  • Upon referral to EagleOne, the patient was recently discharged from the hospital but was suffering from constant pain. He contemplated returning to the emergency room due to difficulties getting his pain medication filled. Our nurse immediately facilitated medication authorization and prevented an unnecessary costly ER visit and helped ease frustration and pain for the patient.

  • Set a treatment plan based on disability guidelines with projections for safe RTW and monitoring to ensure he reached his goals.

  • Ensured prompt communication and education by nurse regarding the impact smoking would have on his healing process.

  • Ultimately, the patient quit smoking which improved the overall healing process!

Coordination of Care:

  • The Hand Therapist was coordinated with the use of Preferred Scheduling for continuity of care, with no delays. Because of this, we were able to get Kevin in with no setbacks and with expedited treatment.

  • Worked closely with the doctor, therapist,  patient and his family support  system to ensure treatment plan remained on track with goals

  • Encouraged open communication both face-to-face and over-the-phone so the patient was clear on the expectations following surgery and throughout the recovery process

  • Compassionately dealt with healing set-backs; coordinating a bone stimulator without delays at the best price

  • 2nd surgical consult was needed and transfer of care was coordinated without delay Approved and coordinated surgery for hardware removal and correction of malunion without delay

The efforts by the nurse in coordination of this patient’s care and her collaboration with the employer, insurance carrier, and providers assisted in very successful outcomes to a complex case. Early medication intervention also helped to avoid litigation and unnecessary legal costs. This is an excellent post surgical outcome!
